Airline punished for untimely refunds.
It seems that whilst the authorities have decided to sanction BA, it could also be argued that they have shown leniency due to the fact that the airline was not alone in withholding funds as many other carriers had to do the same, just to stay afloat. Not only that, but it seems that in 2020 and 2021 BA actually paid out over $40m in refunds to customers who had non-refundable tickets.
As a result, the Transportation Department has credited BA with $550,000, effectively halving what is in the grand scheme of things, an already understated fine for what in normal times would have been considered a major breach. This seems to show that the authorities do have some sympathy for the position that businesses found themselves in and are also willing to take good behaviour into account when handing down punishment for improper conduct.
